The instant temperature shock causes the wax to shrivel and contort, resulting in the writhing surfaces seen preserved in his bronze vessels. Haulenbeek chanced upon this technique simply by pouring hot wax onto a frozen puddle, fooling around late one night in his home town of Chicago.
